Causes and symptoms of Anemia
Fist of all, we shall try and understand the causes and symptoms of Anemia. Subsequently we shall discuss about a few simple home remedies of Anemia. Anemia is the condition wherein the body is low on red blood cells. Healthy red blood cells are main ingredients of hemoglobin that transfers the oxygen and carries out the gas exchange. Common causes of Anemia include diminished production, increased destruction or severe loss of Red blood cells. Deficiency of iron, thyroxine, vitamin B12, C folate also hampers the Red blood cells production in the body. Serious diseases, various infections, toxins, antibodies, and congenital structural abnormalities also lead to the increased destruction of RBC.
Usual symptoms of Anemia are-
- Fatigue
- giddiness
- breathlessness
- Sleeplessness
- Palpitation
- loss of appetite
- pricking sensation in fingers and toes
- swelling around eyes
- whitish tint on skin, nails and eyes
As per the World Health Organization guidelines, men who have less than 13 grams of hemoglobin per deciliter are anemic and the same goes for women who have less than 12 grams of hemoglobin per deciliter.
Home Remedy of Anemia
- Increased intake of Vitamin C
Anemia weakens one’s immune system making one prone to infections and inflammatory diseases. Adequate intake of Vitamin C can prevent this and fortify one from within. Vitamin C also assists in the digestion of Iron.
- Yoghurt with Turmeric
In the morning before breakfast and in the afternoon, yoghurt consumption is recommended along with some turmeric. It is rich in iron, iodine and various micro-nutrients.
- Chyawanprash
Ayurveda recommends Chyawanprash which is a health supplement made up of a super-concentrated blend of nutrient-rich herbs and minerals, as a home remedy for Anemia. It is said to stimulate erythrocyte production in the body. It should be taken twice a day, one teaspoon in the morning in an empty stomach and one teaspoon in the evening – a few hours before sleep.
- Green vegetables
Green vegetables like spinach, kale, mustard greens are a great source of Iron and can be taken regularly to meet the iron requirements of the body.
- Raisins and Dates
These dried fruits offer a combination of iron and Vitamin C. They are also a great source of energy and enable the body to quickly and effectively absorb iron.
- Also, Ayurvedic drugs like Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Dadima (Punica granatum), Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba), Draksha (Vitis vinifera), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Navayasa lauha, Vidangadi lauha, etc can be taken daily with honey for effective results.
